Balance Homes Expands Co-Ownership Program to Twelve States as Emergency Savings Shrink

Balance Homes today announced that its co-ownership program is now available to homeowners in twelve states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. The expansion follows a period of rapid growth for the company, which relaunched the co-ownership product earlier this year. Since relaunching with a $30 million investment led by Falco Group, Balance Homes has moved from six markets to a twelve-state footprint.

The equity is there, the cash is not. According to ATTOM’s Q2 2026 U.S. Home Equity & Underwater Report, 41.1 percent of U.S. homes with a home loan were equity-rich, meaning the combined loan balances were no more than half of the home’s estimated market value. The cash is not: Only 30 percent of Americans say they would pay a $1,000 emergency expense from savings, according to Bankrate’s 2026 Emergency Savings Report, and about half of those who tapped emergency savings in the past year did so for an unplanned expense such as a medical bill or car repair.

Among Americans with emergency savings, the median fund now holds $5,000, half of last year’s figure, according to a February 2026 U.S. News survey. Household debt sits at $18.8 trillion, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s most recent quarterly report.

The program is co-ownership: Balance Homes purchases a share of the home and in the process pays off the existing mortgage, which lowers the co-owner’s total monthly obligations and frees up cash, while the family stays in the home with a defined path back to full ownership. It is designed for homeowners whose finances worked until something changed: a medical bill insurance wouldn’t cover, a temporary loss of income that put a stable household under strain, or other need for flexibility.

“The premise of this company has always been to identify where Balance’s product can be most helpful,” said Aamer Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Balance Homes.

“First providing relief through co-ownership, and immediately setting a path back to full ownership, in partnership with the very people who bought that home, and want to raise their family in that home.”

Balance Homes pairs its agreement with structured and people-focused support. Before signing, every participant completes a session with a HUD-certified housing counselor at no cost and reviews a full walkthrough of the agreement. After closing, homeowners receive ongoing credit counseling. Equity can be repurchased incrementally at any time, and homeowners who buy back Balance Homes’ share within three years earn a sliding-scale fee rebate.
